About the Locations

I have been to many differnet places in my life, but these four are the most important to me. Hastings, Minnesota; the town I grew up in, Grand Marais – Mn; an area I would love to spend more time in, Marquette – Mi; where I currently attend college, and Ontonagon – Mi; an area where I shared many many memories with close friends.

Hastings, Minnesota: I was born and raised here, a rivertown located on the Mississippi 45 minutes southeast of the Twin Cities. It’s an important location in my life as I’ve spent most of it in this town, but despite that I don’t have very many photos here. Most of the photos in this location are of the clouds and sky from my backyard or of the flowers in my mom’s gardens.

Grand Marais, Minnesota

Grand Marais – Mn: Grand Marais and the surrounding areas of the north shore have been an important location in my life for a long time. For many years my parents spent time there on their way to and from Bearskin Lodge, a resort located on the historic Gunflint trail, they would spend their anniversary there every year. As my brother and I got older we eventually spent a couple family trips there and in other areas along the north shore of Minnesota. The specific trip these photos are from was for a blacksmithing class my dad and I attended at the North House Folk School located right in the harbor.

One of my favorite locations in Grand Marais is Artist’s Point, a rocky peninsula where the harbor’s breakwater was built off of. This is one of my favorite areas in Grand Marais because of how large and flat the rocks are, it’s a gorgeous spot for sunsets and enjoying the breeze off the lake.

Marquette, Michigan

Marquette – Mi: My first introduction to Marquette was when my brother decided to attend NMU. After spending time on the north shore of Minnesota I was excited to visit him and see Lake Superior from another shore. Eventually these trips to visit my brother led to me following in his footsteps and ending up at NMU, and therefore Marquette, as well.

Ontonagon, Michigan

46.8711° N, 89.3140° W

Ontonagon – Mi : these photos document an annual trip taken to a cabin west of Ontonagon with the same three friends I’ve been close with since my freshman year of high school. This photo was taken on the second year of this tradition. The cabin is owned by one of those friend’s family, some of which grew up in the area. Despite the cabin being located across a highway from the shore of Lake Superior, there is still access to the lakeshore through an abandoned property across the highway from the cabin. This makes the shore hardly a five minute walk from the cabin and allows for many trips to the beach and a perfect bonfire location. This trip is a tradition which we hope to continue for as many years as we all can.
